{"id":757,"date":"2011-02-18T08:43:34","date_gmt":"2011-02-18T13:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jaimerios.com\/?p=757"},"modified":"2011-02-18T08:43:34","modified_gmt":"2011-02-18T13:43:34","slug":"i-had-to-rename-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jaimerios.com\/?p=757","title":{"rendered":"I had to rename Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had to rebuild my workstation, and alone with it, install a new hard drive that is to be used for testing.<\/p>\n<p>Now both drives have Windows 7 installed.<\/p>\n<p>When the installation for the second drive started up, all I saw was:<br \/>\n    Windows 7<br \/>\n    Windows 7<\/p>\n<p>as my boot options&#8230; Shoot! Which one do I pick?<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for me, there is a way to fix this.<\/p>\n<p>In Windows 7, there is an application, named bcdedit, that allows you to change the description of the installation.<\/p>\n<p>So, I clicked on the &#8220;Start&#8221; menu, clicked in the search box and typed &#8220;cmd&#8221;. The program showed up on the top of the menu and I right-clicked on it to select the &#8220;Run As administrator&#8221; mode.<\/p>\n<p>Once the program opened, I typed:<br \/>\n<code>bcdedit \/export c:\\bcd_backup<\/code><br \/>\nto backup my configuration&#8230; just to be safe.<\/p>\n<p>After I did that, I typed:<br \/>\n<code>bcdedit \/set {current} description \"Windows 7 Working Install\"<br \/>\n<\/code>to rename the default Windows installation so that I know which one to pick.<\/p>\n<p>You can type msconfig at the run line too so that you can set the default operation system to load using a nice UI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extra help from<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/general-discussion\/20191-renaming-earlier-version-windows-dual-boot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/cc709667(WS.10).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had to rebuild my workstation, and alone with it, install a new hard drive that is to be used for testing.
